The Messier Hunt.

Problem Statement

This is a telescope aided observational event. Participating teams must locate as many Messier objects in the night sky as possible, within a given time period.

Team Structure

A team should have at least 2 and at most 4 team members.


This is a 6 hour long event.

Judging Criteria

  • Teams have to show each time they locate an object to the judge.
  • The team that will cover maximum Messier objects in the least time will win.
  • In case of a tie, we will resort to the time taken and the team with the least time taken will win.

Rules and Regulations

  • The participants will not be provided with any equipment. They will have to bring their own telescopes.
  • Participants have to report at least 15 minutes before the event starts.
  • Teams will be provided with Messier catalog and star charts.
  • Cheating is strictly prohibited and will lead to disqualification.
  • Use of mobile phones, automated mounts or any electronic gadgets is not allowed.
  • Organizers reserve the right to modify rules at any point in time, with intimation to registered participants.
